The Red Crow Studio emerged from a desire to create a space where all forms of art, including tattooing, could be supported in a peaceful, positive environment. With over 400 square feet of gallery wall space and a state of the art tattoo station, I am pleased to say that at least the first version of my vision (as nothing is ever static) manifested into something very special. I am proud to be part of North Park, especially Ray Street, where art is celebrated by those who make it and those who appreciate it. Although we are fortunate to have Ray at Night and North Park Nights every month in our neighborhood, art is not so much an event here but rather, who we are.
After many years of wondering what profession I would finally settle into, and the ever-winding paths I followed in hopes of finding out, I was given an unprecedented opportunity. Steve Smith of Ace Tattoo in Ocean Beach offered me an apprenticeship. Steve has been tattooing since 1979 and is one of the finest artists across mediums that I have ever met. I decided to leave my pursuit of a higher degree in Psychology and pursue my first love, art. Upon completing my apprenticeship I ventured off and worked in several tattoo parlors around the county. I learned a lot...both about what to do and what not to do. I also discovered that I wanted to work in a studio that didn't exist yet. So I opened The Red Crow.
My intent is to offer my customers 100% custom work (unless, of course, a specific reproduction is needed) in a one-on-one setting. The Red Crow is a working art space, not a street shop or parlor. I make the distinction because it is the foundation of the arts and culture movement on Ray Street and is of tremendous importance to me as an artist. I view tattooing as an art form and my customers as walking galleries. My limited need for tattooing space allows me to dedicate the majority of The Red Crow to displaying the work of a new visual artist every month.
I hope to see you soon!
